Heather Butts, JD, MPH, MA serves as a regulatory specialist at Columbia University’s Medical Center (CUMC) Institutional Review Board (IRB). She is involved in updating CUMC investigators and IRB members on regulatory changes, and as well as training and education efforts of the Columbia University research community. In addition to be a regulatory specialist for the IRB, Ms. Butts serves as a member of the Columbia University Medical Center’s Privacy Board.

Ms. Butts received her BA from Princeton University, her JD from St. John’s University School of Law, her MPH from Harvard University School of Public Health, and her MA in Education from Columbia University.

In December, 2005, Ms. Butts was appointed to the Council for Certification of IRB Professionals (CCIP). Ms. Butts has participated in several seminars and conferences on public health and the law, research ethics and compliance and recently moderated a panel at the Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research organization’s annual conference entitled The Role of IRB Review in Oral History.
