Lisa Anderson, MA, PhD, is Professor of Political Science and Dean of the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University. One of this country's eminent scholars of the Middle East and North Africa, her academic specialty is state formation and regime change. Her books include The State and Social Transformation in Tunisia and Libya, 1830-1980; Lawless Government and Illegal Opposition in the Middle East; co-editor of The Origins of Arab Nationalism, Obligation and Accountability: Islamic Politics in North Africa, and Absolutism and the Resilience of Monarchy in the Middle East; The Origins of Arab Nationalism; and editor of Transitions to Democracy.
