The Division of Pediatric Anesthesiology provides training in all aspects of pediatric anesthesia at both the resident and fellow level. It has the only ACGME accredited Pediatric Anesthesia Fellowship training program in New York City with dedicated full time faculty in pediatric anesthesia in the NYC metropolitan area. The operating room suite at Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital of New York (MSCHONY, formerly Babies and Children’s Hospital) currently has eight operating rooms. All pediatric surgical specialties are represented including pediatric cardiac surgery, pediatric neurosurgery, pediatric ENT, pediatric urology, pediatric orthopedics and others. The Division of Pediatric Anesthesia provides care for children requiring routine surgery and those who have tertiary care surgical problems. The cardiac surgical program is the largest program in New York. A very active neonatal intensive care unit receives neonates with surgical conditions from the tri-state area. In addition to cases in the operating rooms, the Division of Pediatric Anesthesia also provides care in the Diagnostic and Intervention Imaging Suite and the Pediatric Endoscopy Suite. In 2009, our Division provided close to 10,000 anesthetics to pediatric patients.
The Pediatric Pain Management and Palliative Care team is staffed by members of the pediatric anesthesia faculty, and provides care for children with acute and chronic pain conditions and palliative care consults.
The Division of Pediatric Anesthesia has active programs in both basic and clinical research. It is currently the coordinating site for the multi-site Pediatric Anesthesia Neuro Development Assessment (PANDA) study that will investigate the neuro developmental outcome following exposure to general anesthesia during infancy.
