The Department pays for fellow memberships in the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA), the New York State Society of Anesthesiologists (NYSSA), and the International Anesthesia Research society (IARS) during fellowship training. These memberships include subscriptions to the monthly journals Anesthesiology and Anesthesia & Analgesia. The Department enrolls each fellow in web-based case log system to provide the house officers an on-line method of keeping track of the cases they have done.

Fellows may choose to go to one designated meeting (paid for by the Department) and approved in advance by their program director and the Chair.

Library Resources
There is a departmental library that is available to the residents 24 hours/7 days a week. Many anesthesia subspecialty areas maintain libraries with books and journals specific to their areas of specialization. In addition, the Columbia University’s Health Sciences Library (Augustus C. Long Health Sciences Library) is part of the hospital complex. Personal computers with on-line bibliography services and MEDLINE searches are available in a designated Computer Library. Computers are upgraded with the latest Anesthesia literature available on CD-ROM. Photocopying services are available to residents free of charge. There are computers in the Department’s lounges and libraries with on-line capabilities and with the latest Anesthesia literature available on CD-ROM.

Virginia Apgar Scholars
Physicians interested in applying to our residency program may elect to apply for one of the Virginia Apgar Clinical or Research Scholar positions that are available each year. As a scholar, the resident would commit him/herself at the beginning of their residency to an additional two years of training either in a clinical area or in the research laboratory. An award is given during each clinical year (CA1, CA2, CA3 and fellows) to the residents chosen to be the Apgar Scholars of $15,000 per annum. Please see the Virginia Apgar page for more information.
