Bio-Containment Program

In response to the Ebola epidemic the governor of New York State requested New York Presbyterian Hospital and Columbia University Medical Center to build a Bio-containment Intensive Care Unit (BICU). The hospital and the Department of Anesthesiology have committed a large amount of resources to establish this unit and make it a success. The BICU is located in the Allen Hospital and will be staffed mostly by intensive care and infectious disease physicians. The Department of Anesthesiology has a leading role in the organization and staffing of this unit. Two anesthesiologists from our Department have been fully trained in the safe care of Ebola patients and will be the primary caregivers for any patient that will be admitted to this unit. Since January 2015 the BICU is registered by the CDC and the Department of Health and Human Services as one of 35 units in the U.S. prepared to care for a person with Ebola."
