New York Presbyterian Hospital provides house staff (residents and fellows) and their enrolled eligible dependents with hospital and medical insurance benefits, vision and dental plans. Long-term disability and professional liability insurance is provided at no charge to the house staff. Basic Life Insurance of $100,000 is also provided at no cost to the house staff employee. Vacation Time
Fellows are given 20 workdays paid vacation yearly.
The Department pays for fellow memberships in the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA), the New York State Society of Anesthesiologists (NYSSA), and the International Anesthesia Research society (IARS) during fellowship training.*(Fellows in Hospice and Palliative Medicine are enrolled in the HPM Society instead) These memberships include subscriptions to the monthly journals Anesthesiology and Anesthesia & Analgesia. The Department enrolls each fellow in web-based case log system to provide the house officers an on-line method of keeping track of the cases they have done.
Fellows are provided with an Annual Educational Allowance of $1600. (Fellows may choose to use these funds for to attend a designated meeting (paid for by the Department) and approved in advance by their program director and the Chair.)
Library Resources
There is a departmental library that is available to the residents 24 hours/7 days a week. Many anesthesia subspecialty areas maintain libraries with books and journals specific to their areas of specialization. In addition, the Columbia University’s Health Sciences Library (Augustus C. Long Health Sciences Library) is part of the hospital complex. Personal computers with on-line bibliography services and MEDLINE searches are available in a designated Computer Library. Computers are upgraded with the latest Anesthesia literature available on CD-ROM. There are computers in the Department’s lounges and libraries with on-line capabilities and with the latest Anesthesia literature available on CD-ROM.
