medical student electives

The Department of Anesthesiology offers a one-month 4th year elective in the operating rooms to all students throughout the United States. Its primary objective is to acquaint students with the broad scope of operating room anesthesia as it is practiced here at Columbia. Because of our large service, students can see general surgical cases as well as the subspecialties, such as neurosurgical, cardiothoracic, pediatric and obstetric anesthesia.

Students will spend time in all the surgical areas, including subspecialties.  They will be one-on-one with senior residents and faculty.  They will have the opportunity to place "lines" for invasive hemodynamic monitoring, manage the airway, and perform any specialized techniques the cases may need.

There will be didactic sessions once per week where students are expected to present short topics in anesthesia that they have researched through the literature. At the end of the rotation students are asked to do a longer presentation on a topic in anesthesia of particular interest to them.

Neither weekend nor night call is required. The rotation is offered August through June of the following year. Please submit applications through the Dean's Office (212-305-1642) for permission to take the course before making contact with the Course Director, Dr. Saundra Curry via email

Students may also contact individual attendings in the department to set up special electives.  However, all must be cleared through the Dean’s office.

The Department also offers a one month sub-internship in Cardiothoracic and Surgical Intensive Care (ASO3P) under the guidance of Dr. Robert N. Sladen.
