Columbia University Medical Center is a world leader in solid organ transplantation. The center performs ~120-150 liver transplantations and ~220-250 kidney transplantations per year in addition to pediatric intestinal transplantation. Pancreas transplantation program started in 2008. Transplantation anesthesiology experience gives the residents opportunity to provide care for some of the most critically ill patients presenting to the operating room. CA2 and CA3 residents are provided with ample opportunity to master invasive procedural skills including central line placement, arterial (radial and femoral) line placement and interpretation of hemodynamic fluctuations that occur during the procedure. Virtually all of the patients we care for have several multiorgan/systemic diseases and one or more end organ failure.

We also provide a 1 or 2 year combined clinical and research fellowship training (Liver transplantation/major vascular) for those individuals interested in an academic career. The fellowship emphasizes comprehensive training in perioperative care of patients undergoing liver transplantation as well as major vascular surgical procedures.
