AASK Study

The African-American Study of Kidney Disease (AASK) was a seven-year, multicenter trial involving more than 1,000 African-American patients who had hypertension and kidney (renal) disease but did not have diabetes. AASK is a randomized multicenter clinical trial to investigate whether a specific class of anti-hypertensive drugs (beta-adrenergic blockers, calcium channel blockers, or angiotension converting enzyme inhibitors) and/or the level of blood pressure control (MAP of 102-107 mmHg or 92 mmHg) will influence the progression of hypertensive kidney disease in African Americans.

 

AASK Cohort Study

We are one of 21 centers across the country currently participating in the AASK Cohort study. This is a prospective, observational study that will be an extension of the AASK clinical trial.  The AASK Cohort Study is investigating the environmental, socioeconomic, genetic, physiologic, and other co-morbid factors that influence the progression of kidney disease in a well-characterized cohort of African Americans with hypertensive kidney disease. SHARP – Study of Heart and Renal Protection

The Study of Heart and Renal Protection (SHARP) is an international multi-centre randomized controlled trial to determine the effects of lowering blood cholesterol with a combination of simvastatin and the cholesterol-absorption inhibitor ezetimibe on the risk of major vascular events among patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) who do not have established coronary heart disease.  The study also aims to assess the effect of lowering cholesterol on the rate of loss of renal function in pre-dialysis patients.  An international collaboration between nephrologists and clinical trialists, with an International Coordinating Center and 7 Regional Coordinating Centers, are aiming to recruit 9000 participants in over 350 hospitals in 18 countries within Europe, North America, Asia Pacific and China.

 

E.V.O.L.V.E. Trial – Evaluation of Cinacalcet HCl Therapy to Lower Cardio Vascular Events

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of cinacalcet on cardiovascular events and death in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism (HPT) who are receiving dialysis.
